Anticipation

I've never really had a gaming computer in my room before. I have a computer, but not one I can proudly post the system specifications of online. I came close to turning my computer into a gaming rig a while ago, but I fell a bit short. I was at Wal-Mart about a year ago when I noticed a cheap-but-good 3D card on the shelf; it was just the right type for my computer, and considering my computer is packed to the brim with outdated technology, finding a 3D card that works is a feat in itself. I threw down the $55 dollars I needed to make it mine and bolted for home. After arriving, and taking a much needed bathroom pit-stop, (the anticipation was going to make me piss myself) I installed it into my computer and loaded up a game I couldn't play before I bought the card: Quake 3. The game performed okay, but it wasn't silky smooth like I wanted it to be. Most of my other games got a big performance boost, but none of them ran with that “all-settings-maxed stride” that PC gamers everywhere always strive for. I was defeated. I knew what the problem was: all of my other hardware was bottlenecking my graphics card. Sure, Quake3 is an afterthought to my GeForce2, but it stresses my CPU to the max. It didn't matter that my graphics card was hardcore, the rest of my hardware wasn't. It also sort of bothered me that I could never get WindowsXP to install correctly, no matter what I tried; it was the same story for Windows 2000. No matter what I did, what patches I applied, what workarounds I followed, it just didn't work. WindowsXP not working doesn't bother me so much anymore, though; I want it to work, but I guess I don't need it. I did get really into the whole Linux thing a few months ago, and honestly I still am. I will also proudly state, with a great deal of confidence, that I think Linux is a far better OS than Windows. Once I get a bigger hard-disk, I plan to dual boot and use Linux for everything except games. Its too bad my damn computer currently doesn't have enough hard disk space for me to this decently; I'm forced to use Windows exclusively not by choice, but because I don't have enough space to house Windows and Linux at the same time.

All of the above will change very soon, though. Jared has plans to buy a new computer that he will set into motion in a couple days; and seeing has how he'll have no use or space for his old rig once he gets his new one, he's giving it to me. This is pathetic. Not only am I getting hand-me-downs, I'm getting them from someone I'm not even related to. The feeling is a little strange, its like waiting for someone else's birthday. I picture Jared sitting at a giant, regal dinner table wearing royal looking robes and eating a roasted chicken, while I crawl around on floor in torn rags chewing on a bone. A butler walks in with a massive plate covered with alluring food and places it on the table. Jared tosses his chicken to me and begins mealing on the contents of the gargantuan platter. Thats exactly how it is. But you know what? That chicken is going to be good, damn good.
